Assembly urges bigger role for national parliaments
Paris, 18 June 2001.- The WEU-ESDA Assembly Monday urged member parliaments to “spare no effort to stimulate debate on the future of parliamentary scrutiny over European and foreign policy, security and a common defence.”

The Assembly adopted a resolution in a parliamentary and public relations committee report that national parliaments should ensure “that parliamentarians are aware of the need to maintain democratic dialogue with governments in order to be able to grapple with the new reality of problems on a global scale and the political choices arising in consequence.”

The report, entitled “The position of member states on the future of the parliamentary dimension in the new European security and defence,” also called for parliaments to “organise seminars on the future of European security and defence institutions in collaboration with (specialised) academic and research institutes.”
